Some of the highest quality Malachite comes from Congo Africa even though Malachite is found in other places around the world. Why is Malachite so expensive when it comes to carvings? Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, with the formula Cu2CO3(OH)2. And when this mineral becomes a powder/dust (like the dust that is produced in the carving process) it becomes airborne and when it gets into our respiratory system it is extremely toxic and dangerous to our health. Then men in Congo whom are carving these beautiful Malachite carvings are risking their lives AND THEY KNOW IT yet they do it anyway; Which is why they charge us so much for these items thus making them expensive for their small size. We are grateful for their service and grateful they aren’t charging more haha. Enjoy!
